Monhegan Island is about 10 miles off the coast of Maine. There are no cars. There are no paved roads,... and you won't find a visitor's center. What you will find is a fishing village, an artist's colony, 160 foot headlands, 17 miles of hiking trails, the wreck of the D.T. Sheridan, a lighthouse, a museum, nearby Manana Island, and breathtaking beauty. The island, about 1.7 miles long, by 0.7 miles wide, was visited by Capt. John Smith in 1614. Native Americans knew it as a prime fishing area. Today's small fishing village encompasses approximately one third of the island. The remainder is preserved and protected by Monhegan Associates, a private land trust. Below are 2006 shots by either Joe or Mabel. I'll leave these up for a while and then rotate to a different batch. Because of the number of shots, I didn't try to present them in any particular order, nor are there any descriptions. Monhegan speaks for itself. |
